The Importance of Good Graphic Design in Business

With generative AI tools and powerful sites like Canva, it is easier than ever to take graphic design into your own hands. While these tools have done marvelous work in making great graphics accessible to novice users, neither are a fool-proof replacement for a graphic design team or a professional graphic designer.  

AI, for example, has recently been found to be simply stealing copyrighted art, likenesses and images from various online sources. A copyright strike or DCMA take down can be incredibly disastrous for your brand and reputation, regardless of intent or simply not knowing the image generated by AI is potentially someone else’s work.  

Generative AI is still a growing and changing technology. Many images created with AI have a very distinct “off” quality to them that may seem innocuous but are major artistic errors. Oftentimes, AI generated humans have too many or too few fingers, blurry backgrounds, words in non-existent languages and even racially insensitive characters and imagery.  

With AI still being in its relative infancy, it is still best employed by someone with a strong footing in graphic design, art, illustration and media to harness the potential power of the tools currently available to the masses.  

Canva is a graphic design tool based on templates and pre-existing elements that was designed by a social media manager who was looking to help alleviate pressure on their graphics team within the framework of a traditional advertising agency.  Canva is a powerful tool but due to its reliance on templates and pre-existing assets, it’s easy to see limitations in the program.  

If you are ever scrolling on social media, it’s easy to start spotting graphics that have the tell-tale familiarity of something created from a widely used template. And while Canva has become increasingly sophisticated over the years, another issue becomes apparent that the tool is no longer as accessible to novice or unexperienced users. Canva has also incorporated more AI into its software encouraging users to let machine learning take over the work of writing copy, designing social media posts and creating print materials. 

There’s a reason why some of the top agencies in the world are slow to adopt AI fully or to shelve their entire graphic design teams for a Canva Pro subscription: good design comes down to the intangibles. Beautiful design is all about the human element and expertise that combines font, texture, typography, photography, iconography and composition into one fluid piece.
